Peters Denial – Hill City Church – 05 NOVEMBER 2017
Peters denial in all four gospels
14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.
16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'”
19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.
21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.
Put your sword away. Those who live by the sword will die by sword
The 3 Be-trails
1, When Jesus gets arrested, Peter cuts the ear off a servant.
2, A girl asks Peter and he denys him.
3, Other people as Peter and he denies him.
The rooster crows 3 times signifying that Jesus has been betrayed 3 times. Peter then goes on to curse himself once he realises what he has done.
The other accounts can be found in Luke 22 and John 18.
Spurgeon – Scripture reminds us men are at their best but only being a man.
When people talk of peter they only tend to relate to Peter for his negative parts. However Peter was so much more. He walked water. Healed sick. 3000 people saved off one sermon. One Jesus inner three. Left his family to follow Jesus. But we only relate to the bad, not all of the good points that he had.
If a man like Peter can get to the point of denying Jesus, no one is beyond denying Jesus.
When we come born again we become new flesh. We live as new creation. And live in our own falleness.
1 Corinthians 10:12 Pride cometh before the fall.
Humbling ourselves. Gives grace to the humble.
Stop trusting too much in our own ability
What happened and how we can ourselves be trapped.
1. Knowing better than God
He thought he knew better than Jesus Denying that Jesus needs to die on cross.
Self confidence is saying I know better than God. I will never deny you. Peter thinks he knows better than Jesus. Stop listens to Jesus ? To overcome listen to Jesus. He knows best.
2. Peter relied on his own Confidence / Strength and did’nt trust Gods Judgement.
Trusted to much in own confidence. He stopped praying. Sleeping in self confidence.
Think u can do things yourself. Some say lack of prayer is functional atheism. Hard but true. No better indication of when u pray. Trust in yourself. Peter forced the situation.
Wanna show Jesus that ur serious. We jump straight in and make things fit his belief.
If you rely on itself and u know better and u force situation to happen. Pray and be patient. God will do something.
3, Followed Jesus at a distance
Following Jesus at a distance but hasn’t run away. He wanted to follow Jesus but not to closely. Maybe he wanted to convince himself he was a follower but didn’t want to directly follow him.playing church. Not directly associating himself. Without getting close. You are exposed. You want to blend in. Be with the world but still blend in.
Shine like stars in a dark world. Stand out and don’t blend in. Take pride in the name of Jesus. Don’t hide it don’t blend in. Need to stick close by and they need to know your a Christian.
Go all out for Jesus and do not go out.
What is the answer. Don’t try in own strength.
Stay close to Jesus and u will stand out. Don’t try and stand out. Stay close to Jesus and u will stand out. Don’t be afraid to associate yourself to Jesus.
Don’t act impetuously stay close to Jesus.
If ur blending in get close to Jesus
Peter denyed Jesus 3 times. I do not know him.
Hope for the worst sinner. Bottom of the lowest valley.
You don’t have to epically fail . Take heed of the warning signs and stay humble. Listen and follow him closely.
